On
August 9th, 1945, the city of Nagasaki ceased to exist.
On the 11th of August, photograher Yosuke Yamahata
took this picture close to the blast's epicenter.
The entire city had been pulverized - and the little
that remained was still smoldering. The background
in the photo was near the center of the explosion
- where everything had been turned to powder. In the
foreground can be seen the burnt and radioactive remains
of one of the city's unfortunate inhabitants.
Like
snapshots from the end of the world, Yamahata's pictures
are compiled into an astounding book, titled Nagasaki
Journey.
