< BACK TO NAGASAKI

This is one of the most astonishing representations of war ever depicted in the world of art. Though the man who painted the scene was not a professional artist, he succeeded in capturing the true face of war.

Shimada Tsuruhiko created the artwork and he described what he had seen in the following manner: "One week after the bombing, the body of a horse is lying on its back in the vicinity of the Urakami Railway Station - Mid-August."

Mixed with the mounds of rubble one can clearly see torn clothing, personal items... and swatches of skin and hair.
