In
1979 I briefly met Phranc while I was working in the offices
of Slash magazine. At the time she had just quit the techno-punk
band, Nervous Gender, a group that played avant-garde synthesizer
music. She
was kind enough to allow me to sketch her while visiting
the Slash office, and I did this pencil drawing based on
those sketches (leaving her hands unfinished).
At
the time of the portrait, Phranc was in the process of becoming
a solo performer. She later emerged as L.A.'s first
punk folk singer. Her moniker changed to Phranc, the
Jewish Lesbian Punk Folk Singer.
