TO VALLEN'S PUNK PORTRAITS
Portrait
of Janet
Vallen
1979
Color pencil on paper
11" x 16"
I
did this color pencil drawing in 1979, using my girlfriend
of the time, Janet Duckworth, as the model. Janet was truly
one of the most intelligent and freest spirits I ever had
the honor of knowing. Flamboyant and outlandish, she succeeded
in turning heads everywhere she went just by being her sweet
nonconformist self.
We
became friends while working together at an L.A. publishing
house (Janet was, and is an editor). Together we became
fixtures at the Masque, Whiskey a Go Go, and other L.A.
punk clubs of the late 70's. At
the time there were very few people walking around with
blue hair, but Janet's outrageous sense of style and her
"I don't care" attitude helped to spread visual havoc on
the streets of Los Angeles.
