Artist's
statement:
"I created this painting for the Los Angeles showing of the traveling
exhibit, At Work: The Art of California Labor.
Organized
by the San Francisco State University Art Gallery and the California
Historical Society, the June-July 2006 exhibit depicted California's
labor history through the eyes of artists who had witnessed labor
struggles since the turn of the 20th century.
Just
prior to the exhibit's opening, the largest demonstration in the
history of L.A. took place on May 1st, when up to 2 million immigrants
and their supporters filled the streets of the city to show their
support for immigrant's rights.
It
was at that march and rally that I decided a painting of an immigrant
worker would be appropriate for the "At Work" exhibit. My painting
was also featured on NBC 4 television news of Los Angeles, when
Cary Berglund, the station's arts and culture reporter, interviewed
me regarding the exhibition."
