Deemed blasphemous by many, it was exhibited at the European Union Parliament in Brussels, Belgium in May of 2023. I will contrast Ohlson\u2019s irreverent photo with a brief overview of how visual artists in the West have portrayed The Last Supper\u2014the final meal Jesus Christ shared with his apostles before being crucified.<\/p>\n<p>I write this as someone born into a Catholic family; you might call me a \u201clapsed Catholic.\u201d As a child I learned of the medieval, gothic, and renaissance art of Europe\u2014artworks rooted in Christian thought. For me that remains a durable link to the Christian world, and European art from those periods continue to be a touchstone in my artistic philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>To wit, I have always admired the 15th century painters of the Netherlands. Rogier van der Weyden and Jan van Eyck are favorites of mine. I was blessed to see Van Eyck\u2019s 1434 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikiart.org\/en\/jan-van-eyck\/the-arnolfini-wedding-the-portrait-of-giovanni-arnolfini-and-his-wife-giovanna-cenami-the-1434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Arnolfini Wedding<\/em><\/a> in London\u2019s National Gallery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15989\" style=\"width: 701px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-15989\" src=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/descent_from_the_cross.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/descent_from_the_cross.jpg 900w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/descent_from_the_cross-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/descent_from_the_cross-400x257.jpg 400w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/descent_from_the_cross-768x493.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Descent from the Cross&#8221; (Detail). Oil on wood panel. 1435.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was nineteen when I visited Spain\u2019s Prado museum and came across the 1435 oil painting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museodelprado.es\/en\/the-collection\/art-work\/the-descent-from-the-cross\/856d822a-dd22-4425-bebd-920a1d416aa7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The<\/em> <em>Descent from the Cross<\/em><\/a> by Rogier van der Weyden. It shook me to my core. The details in the painting are indescribable; there is stubble on the face of Jesus, the wounds on his body spare no detail, tears pour from the swollen red eyes of the Virgin, who has fainted\u2014her position a mirror of the dead Christ. You can count the golden threads on one man\u2019s robe; he is probably Joseph of Arimathea, the wealthy man who took responsibility for the burial of Jesus. In this period oil was introduced as a medium to carry pigments, and it brought dazzling new transparency effects to painting. Artists in the Netherlands took oil painting to grand new heights, no more evident than in Rogier\u2019s <em>Descent from the Cross<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Sometime around 1415 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dieric_Bouts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dieric Bouts<\/a> was born in Haarlem, Netherlands. It is thought that he eventually studied under Rogier van der Weyden. Between the years 1464 and 1468, Bouts created his oil painting <em>The Last Supper<\/em>. It depicts Jesus and his twelve disciples having their last meal of bread and wine just before Christ is arrested and crucified.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15994\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15994\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-15994\" src=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/last_supper_bouts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/last_supper_bouts.jpg 756w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/last_supper_bouts-300x363.jpg 300w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/last_supper_bouts-400x484.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;The Last Supper.&#8221; Dieric Bouts. (1464\u20131468) Central panel of the Altarpiece of the Holy Sacrament, that sits in St. Peter\u2019s Church, Leuven, Belgium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Last Supper<\/em> is a beautifully composed and detailed work that places Christ and his apostles at a bench table covered with a white tablecloth. Jesus is the exact center of the composition; the painting would be one of the first in northern Europe to use the technique of linear perspective. Over an exquisitely painted silver goblet Jesus blesses the bread and wine consumed during the Passover meal. John\u2019s hands are in prayer, he would be the one to ask Jesus for the name of the disciple who betrayed him. Judas Iscariot the betrayer, wearing a dark blue tunic and red robe, sits across from Jesus, his face in shadowy profile.<\/p>\n<p>Bouts filled his painting with a profusion of details. The intricacy of the tiled floor and the architectural flourishes of the room; an elaborately painted candelabra hanging from the wood ceiling above Christ\u2019s head; the windows in the room giving a peek at a medieval city in the Netherlands. It would in fact be the central panel of a triptych painted on wood that Bouts titled, <em>Altarpiece of the Holy Sacrament<\/em>. Circa 1495.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While many artists throughout the ages painted a version of The Last Supper, it is the High Renaissance artist <a href=\"https:\/\/infogalactic.com\/info\/Leonardo_da_Vinci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leonardo da Vinci<\/a> that is most associated with the Christian theme. <a href=\"https:\/\/artincontext.org\/the-last-supper-da-vinci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Da Vinci painted his <em>The Last Supper<\/em><\/a> between the years 1495 and 1498, a good 30 years after Dieric Bouts painted his version.<\/p>\n<p>Da Vinci depicted the disciples gathered around Jesus when he announced: \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.\u201d However, Da Vinci broke with orthodoxy by making his painting a psychological study of the disciples reacting to the remark. In his composition the artist posed the Twelve Apostles in four groups, each holding three disciples. Da Vinci\u2019s intention was to depict the disbelief, anger, and shock of the primary disciples.<\/p>\n<p>Peter, John, and Judas Iscariot form one of those groupings; they are seen at Christ&#8217;s right. The youngest apostle John is dressed in a blue tunic, his shoulder touched by Peter\u2019s had in an emotive gesture, Judas sits on the left, his face obscured by shadow. The betrayer clutches a money bag in his right hand, and he is the only one to have his elbow on the table. It was not a fresco mural where water-based pigment was quickly painted onto fresh lime plaster before it dried, Leonardo painted much too slowly for that. But it wasn\u2019t an oil painting either. The artist tried something unconventional, he applied water-based tempera <em>and<\/em> oil paint to a dried gesso ground applied to the wall of the monastery. While the painting was a monumental artistic achievement, it was also a stupendous technical disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Since the mural was not permanently affixed to the plastered wall like a fresco painting, moisture built up beneath the prepared ground causing the artwork to erode. Just years after completion paint began flaking off; the deterioration only increased over time. At one point a doorway was cut into the mural wall, the top of which juts into <em>The Last Super<\/em> table<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The monastery was even hit by an Allied bomb in WW2, but the mural survived. In 1999 it underwent a 20-year long restoration; colors that could not be restored were filled in with beige watercolor pigment. National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Skipping ahead to the 20th century, even the Spanish surrealist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Salvador-Dali\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/a> offered a take on The Last Supper in a 1955 painting he titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.gov\/collection\/art-object-page.46590.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Sacrament of the Last Supper<\/em><\/a>. When he painted <em>Sacrament<\/em> he was well into expounding his \u201cNuclear mysticism\u201d theoretics\u2014a hodgepodge of Catholicism and his obsession with nuclear physics and geometry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16010\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16010\" src=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/dali_christ.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/dali_christ.jpg 900w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/dali_christ-300x258.jpg 300w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/dali_christ-400x344.jpg 400w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/dali_christ-768x660.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Detail of Jesus Christ from Salvador Dal\u00ed\u2019s &#8220;The Sacrament of the Last Supper.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the painting Dali presented Christ and the 12 Apostles sitting at a table, the disciples have their heads bowed in prayer, giving them anonymity and centering attention on Christ\u2014who is semi transparent. The backdrop shows the coastal cliffs of Catalan, the autonomous region of Spain where the artist lived, and three boats of the fishermen who fished the seas. The Eucharist is simply denoted by a single glass of wine and a humble bread loaf divided in two.<\/p>\n<p>Above the scene Dali painted heaven as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuemath.com\/geometry\/dodecahedron\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dodecahedron<\/a>, reflecting the 12 Apostles. God the Father is also transparent and superimposed over the twelve faced geometric object. Dal\u00ed said of his painting:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The first Holy Communion on Earth is conceived as a sacred rite of the greatest happiness for humanity. This rite is expressed with plastic means and not with literary ones. My ambition was to incorporate to Zurbar\u00e1n&#8217;s mystical realism, the experimental creativeness of modern painting in my desire to make it classic.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dal\u00ed of course was one of the original surrealists that gathered around the radical French writer and poet <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andr%C3%A9_Breton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andr\u00e9 Breton<\/a>, who wrote the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surrealist_Manifesto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Surrealist Manifesto<\/em><\/a> in 1924.\u00a0 According to Breton the objective of surrealism was to create a &#8220;pure psychic automatism&#8221; that would spring from freeing artists of rationality, reason, and aesthetics. The stuff of dreams would fill surrealist art. Surrealism was influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DaDa<\/a>, as well as marxist and anarchist ideas\u2014Breton himself was a follower of the Soviet revolutionary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/question\/Who-was-Leon-Trotsky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leon Trotsky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The surrealists attracted an extremely diverse crowd of malcontents; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giorgio_de_Chirico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giorgio de Chirico<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Man_Ray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Man Ray<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joan_Mir%C3%B3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joan Mir\u00f3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marcel_Duchamp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcel Duchamp<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yves_Tanguy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yves Tanguy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Max_Ernst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max Ernst<\/a>, Dal\u00ed, and others. With time Breton viewed Dal\u00ed as a money chasing opportunist\u2014which he certainly was, and branded him with the monicker of \u201cAvida Dollars,\u201d an anagram meaning \u201ceager for dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since Dali supported capitalism and didn\u2019t back the 1936 leftist revolution in Spain, Breton and his supporters expelled him from the surrealist group. It was a circle too diverse to remain cohesive (some avoided politics altogether), and so it divided into factions. Ironically, the original ideals and works of Breton&#8217;s group are largely forgotten outside of isolated artistic circles and academia, but the name Dal\u00ed became synonymous with surrealism.<\/p>\n<p>In the post WW2 period, Dal\u00ed the surrealist became Dal\u00ed the devout Roman Catholic&#8230; with a surrealist twist. Religious iconography began to appear in his paintings and prints. His oil painting <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Madonna_of_Port_Lligat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Madonna of Port Lligat<\/em><\/a> (1949), was actually blessed by Pope Pius XII. <a href=\"https:\/\/infogalactic.com\/info\/Christ_of_Saint_John_of_the_Cross\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Christ of Saint John of the Cross<\/em><\/a> (1951) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crucifixion_(Corpus_Hypercubus)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crucifixion Corpus Hypercubus<\/a> (1954), are also good examples of the artist\u2019s conversion.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to the last entry in this article, an expository look at <em>The Last Supper<\/em>, a 1998 photographic version of the Biblical story. It was created by Swedish lesbian photographer Elisabeth Ohlson. Her controversial photo stirred an outcry when exhibited at the 2023 Plenary Session of the European Union Parliament in Brussels, Belgium.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16015\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16015\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16015\" src=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/the_very_last_supper.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/the_very_last_supper.jpg 900w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/the_very_last_supper-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/the_very_last_supper-400x209.jpg 400w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/the_very_last_supper-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cThe Last Supper.\u201d Elisabeth Ohlson. The trans Christ sports a painted on beard and sits at a cheap folding table with his 12 Apostles, except the disciples are transgendered persons and cross dressing homosexuals. One wears a black leather sado-masochistic outfit and platform heels, the disciples are drinking Champaign and eating chips.<\/p>\n<p>As an example of today\u2019s rubbishy postmodern shock art, <em>The Last Supper<\/em> is pretty much standard fair&#8230; but as sacred Christian art it is nothing more than an abomination. Isn\u2019t the Ohlson exhibit a violation of the EU Parliament rules that exhibitions cannot \u201cbe offensive or of an inflammatory nature\u201d? Unfortunately the answer is clear, the EU Parliament gave its approval to the provocation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16018\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16018\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16018\" src=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/trans_christ.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/trans_christ.jpg 745w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/trans_christ-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/art-for-a-change.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/trans_christ-400x321.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Behold the Man. Detail from &#8220;The Last Supper&#8221; photo by Elisabeth Ohlson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Last Supper<\/em> photo was exhibited in a restricted area of the EU Parliament building on May 2 through May 5, 2023, at an invitation only show. The photo is part of a body of work Ohlson titled <em>Ecce Homo, <\/em>Latin for \u201cBehold the Man.\u201d Comprised of photos depicting stories from the Bible, the figures portrayed are &#8220;sexual outcasts,&#8221; some dressed in black leather fetish gear. Selected <em>Ecce Homo<\/em> photos including <em>The Last Supper<\/em> made up the EU Parliament exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>I should also note that on Dec 5, 2022, a Nativity scene was displayed in the European Parliament for the first and only time\u2014but it was authorized solely as a \u201cspecial exhibition.\u201d Prior to that single display EU officials said the presentation would be \u201cpotentially offensive\u201d to nonbelievers. The showing took place because in 2022 the president of the EU, Maltese politician Roberta Metsola, backed the Nativity scene proposal. Inexplicably, in 2023 the EU decided that <em>Ecce Homo<\/em> would not be \u201cpotentially offensive\u201d to believers.<\/p>\n<p>Only parliamentarians and their staff, or those with special permit badges were allowed to enter the Ohlson exhibition. The general public was barred entry. On Twitter the artist made the following statement regarding her <em>Ecce Homo <\/em>series:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere are a lot of pictures of Jesus with heterosexual people. Millions, billions of paintings, famous artists. But this is just 12 pictures of Jesus loving the LGBT rights, so 12 pictures should not be so scary for them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite Ohlson\u2019s assertion, Christian love and forgiveness is <em>not<\/em> the subject of her photos\u2014she might wish it to be so, but the Christian community will still view her works as blasphemous. Pope Francis has referred to \u201cgender theory\u201d as an evil \u201cdangerous\u201d cultural aim that will \u201cmake everything homogenous, neutral. Detail from Ohlson&#8217;s &#8220;The Last Supper.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With the following remark Ohlson claims to believe in Jesus:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am a lesbian Christian photographer who believes that Christ represents everyone, including the sexual outcasts. Two thousand years ago Jesus taught love and justice and was killed for it. One of the accusations that led to his crucifixion was blasphemy, the same accusation that is brought against me and numerous other artists.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ohlson seems to see herself as a Christian martyr, going so far as to equate the crucifixion of Jesus with her being called a blasphemer. Consider Ohlson\u2019s photo <em>The Baptism of Jesus<\/em> from her <em>Ecce Homo<\/em> series. Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, but Ohlson depicted the sacrament of initiation as a homoerotic baptism in a gay bathhouse. Apologies for the censorship, but I&#8217;m trying to keep this page family friendly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What is the distinction between the photos made by Ohlson, and <em>The Last Supper<\/em> paintings created by Dieric Bouts, Leonardo da Vinci, and Salvador Dal\u00ed? While beauty, transcendency, and proficient technique motivated the painters, there was something else that inspired them&#8230; piety. Ohlson\u2019s photo has none of those attributes, it is simply a political provocation meant to goad and offend.<\/p>\n<p>As a postmodern provocateur Ohlson is familiar with insulting Christians. In Sept. 1998 she exhibited <em>Ecce Homo<\/em> in Sweden at the Uppsala Cathedral, the ecclesiastical center of Sweden and seat of the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. Needless to say it was a huge controversy\u2014<em>The Last Supper<\/em> and <em>The Baptism of Jesus <\/em>outraged many Swedes.<\/p>\n<p>When she took <em>Ecce Homo<\/em> to Belgrade, Serbia in 2012 to be exhibited at the Centre for Cultural Decontamination, it appalled thousands of Christians. They gathered in front of the gallery wearing crosses, singing religious songs, and carrying posters of Jesus and Mary.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit had to be protected by armed riot police on a 24 hour basis, and 2,000 police were needed to control the protests. The leader of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Irinej called the exhibit \u201cblasphemous\u201d and said it should be banned by the government. Serbia&#8217;s Islamic religious council, or Meshihat, joined the protests and made the following statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It is neither art nor freedom of speech, because it consciously insults faith and believers. Muslims are just as offended by this sacrilegious representation of Jesus, as with sacrilegious representations of Muhammad the blessed.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since postmodernist artists possess little more than transgressive sensibilities, one should expect shenanigans like <em>The Last Supper<\/em> from them\u2014but that does not explain why the elites of the European Union Parliament would condone the exhibit. The EU parliament rules are very clear:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Cultural events and exhibitions shall not in any way undermine the dignity of parliament, be offensive or of an inflammatory nature, or likely to give rise to disturbances in the designated exhibition areas.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The exhibition of Ohlson\u2019s photos was organized by Malin Bj\u00f6rk, who is a member of the socialist political party in Sweden known as the V\u00e4nsterpartiet (Left Party). Bj\u00f6rk is also active in the EU parliamentary grouping called <a href=\"https:\/\/left.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Left<\/a>, representing leftwing, communist, and socialist politicians of the 27 member states in the parliament.<\/p>\n<p>In an online announcement of the exhibit of Ohlson&#8217;s photos, <a href=\"https:\/\/allevents.in\/brussels\/lunch-lecture-with-elisabeth-ohlson\/200024435500903?ref=past-event-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Left Party stated<\/a>: &#8220;Ohlson had her artistic breakthrough in 1998, with the exhibition <em>Ecce Homo<\/em> in a Swedish cathedral. In the show, Jesus was depicted together with LGBTQI people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Left Party failed to mention that Ohlson&#8217;s &#8220;breakthrough&#8221; 1998 exhibit in Sweden angered many Swedes, or that the exhibit included <em>The Baptism of Jesus<\/em> photo of Christ in a gay bathhouse with his penis clearly visible.<\/p>\n<p>As an American artist I cherish the First Amendment of the US Constitution, as it guarantees freedom of expression\u2014something that is vital to every artist but not protected in many places in today\u2019s world. The constitution of Belgium also assures free expression. That is precisely why I would <em>never<\/em> call for a ban of Ohlson\u2019s works\u2014but <em>I can emphatically criticize her photos<\/em> in the marketplace of ideas&#8230; which is also my right.<\/p>\n<p>The few corporate news outlets that have <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dw_europe\/status\/1654018020900061184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bothered to report<\/a> on the Ohlson exhibit, framed the controversy in terms of &#8220;right-wing parties,&#8221; or &#8220;far-right politicians&#8221; trying to censor Ohlson. Is the Pope a member of an extremist right-wing group? Is the humble and reverential global community of Christians nothing more than a mob of right-wing nationalists?<\/p>\n<p>While the press displays bias against Christians, it pays little attention to the communists and socialists that organized the exhibit. Is the secular left now allowed to revise Christian theology? When do they get to reshape Islam into a politically correct religion?<\/p>\n<p>Christianity is the largest religion in the world, with some 2.4 billion adherents around the globe. Even in Belgium where the EU Parliament is located, some 60% of the population still identifies as Christian. Obviously EU elites couldn\u2019t care less if Christians would be offended by a transgender Christ. However, I suspect they would think \u201cthe dignity of parliament\u201d might be undermined if <em>The Last Supper<\/em> photo\u2014Heaven forbid\u2014portrayed a transgender Mohammed.<\/p>\n<p>Now <em>that<\/em> would be inflammatory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This essay will broach the subject of The Last Supper, a controversial artwork by photographer Elisabeth Ohlson.
