Environmentalists played a large role in the demonstrations and they addressed a number of concerns like environmental racism, where toxic substances are dumped in poor communities of color. The problems of over development were also addressed, and these giant frogs symbolized the struggle to maintain the few wild places left in southern California. The frogs were constructed of cloth over a light frame of wood, and were controlled from the inside by a person who could manipulate the reptile's arms. Photograph by Mark Vallen © |
