I shot this photograph during the protests that occurred on 8/16/2000 against police brutality, the death penalty, political prisoners, and mass incarceration. Standing directly in front of this young woman were many dozens of heavily armed riot police holding twelve gauge shotguns, clubs, and tear gas guns.

This girl, along with the many young people standing around her... were not at all intimidated and were instead determined to make their point. Can you say the same about your own commitment to free speech?
