I saw many protesters with gasmasks or vinegar soaked rags to breathe through. What was remarkable about the demonstrators was that when they felt threatened by the police... rather than simply withdrawing, they donned their gasmasks and non-violently stood their ground. Few protesters would abandon an area when confronted by heavily armed police, it seemed that many were willing to be gassed and clubbed in order to make their point. Photograph by Mark Vallen © |
